His lies were exposed and he couldn't be the man to stand up and face it. So he shot his wife the mother of his child in the face three times. Now we all live with this every day! We have had to "adjust" our lives to this. And every morning when we open our eyes we remember the horror and violence of that night.

So today Pam, we will send you dozens of balloons, we will cry and laugh. We will share stories of you like always. And we will hold your children tighter today, for you. We will tell them how much you loved them.

I wonder that so many times a day still. Bomar had a choice that day Nov.2, 2007 when Ed walked in to his office. He could have listened and used his detective brain and remembered all those complaints made on Kevin. His excessive phone calls to Pam. His disturbing stories. If he only investigated Ed's claims instead of calling Kevin maybe my sister would be ALIVE today.
So today I will think about what if. As I wish I could pick that phone up and call her.

I secured these two websites for Laura Spars/ MIOIDV Corp. [Pam Aukerman's best friend]. The decision of which one Laura will use, is still up in the air. A couple of days ago, the two individuals who hijacked the original Pam Aukerman website deleted all of my posts. But what really cut to the core, was the act of them deleting Laura's beautiful 'from the heart' writings to her friend Pam, from that website. Laura's wonderful insightful letters detailed the first two years of hers and others close to Pam, as they came to grips with the devistating aftermath of the officer involved domestic violence murder of Pam.

What did they leave on the original website? My MIOIDV legislation which they are now claiming is their legislation. Hmmm....

As most of you are aware, the MIOIDV website that I created in Pamela Aukerman Brainard's name was hi-jacked. All but three posts on that website were mine and my material on that website was used for the 'Jenni Justice Fund'. This fund was attempting to solicite a quarter of a million dollars from individuals. People going to that site, saw all my work / posts on the site, and thought I was part of Jenni Justice Foundation. NOT!

The other OIDV site is now claiming copyright of the MIOIDV legislation and the MIOIDV Awareness bill that I authored. This has of course devistated me and I am very raw right now. I put my heart into my work. I do not do it for profit. I do it to raise awareness and to bring voice to MIOIDV victims.

For those of you doing research papers, etc., just cite: cite the website...cite the newspaper...cite the reporter.

In May of 2007, Representative Kimberly Meltzer (Macomb County, MI), requested that Renee' Harrington and Cheryl Rozman write a draft for an officer involved domestic violence law.

On June 26, 2007, Renee' and Cheryl submitted to Representative Meltzer the 'Michigan Officer Involved Domestic Violence Legislation'.

Following the officer involved domestic violence murder of Pamela Aukerman, Renee' and Cheryl signed over all rights of the Michigan OIDV legislation to the Aukerman family, on November 05, 2007. After receiving copyright to the legislation, the Aukerman's renamed the legislation: "The Pamela Aukerman Michigan Officer Domestic Violence Law."

As of February 15, 2008 the Aukerman family has shared copyright of the Pamela Aukerman Officer Involved Domestic Violence Legislation with the Michigan Officer Involved Domestic Violence Corporation.
Renee' you changed the name of the legislation and the awareness day. I know how you work. You also changed the websites "mission" statement. I have left those on Pam's site because it shows your character. The reason you say you started MIOIDV was for PAM! Now you want to defend her on facebook and to set up another page. FORGET IT! It's to late to change now Renee' you've shown your true colors! You've done nothing but bring shame on Pam and us. I'm not trying to steal anything from you Renee' you gave it to us.
As for everything else Renee' Harrington of MIOIDV has to say I will not even comment on. I just wanted to let you all know this. Mother Bear Mother Bear It was a cool summer morning the cemetery dripping wet from last nights dew.
The smell of yesterday's cut grass and the breeze blowing the relaxing aroma of lilac bushes.
I stand there and hear the birds chirping and the sound of water rushing out of the fountain.
The horizon lit with bright colors of red and orange.
The blueish, purple mix of colors made the tomb stone look soft and relaxing.
As I approach the stone, time seemed to stop, my heart felt to drop.
It's a sad feeling but a feeling of safety as I stood above my mothers grave.
Today is Sunday, the day we visited her.
I told her how things were going, but she can't talk back.
The words seemed to flow but I had to tell her it was time for me to go.
I walked away eyes starting to drip.
I stop and stared, and with a light voice I say "I love you".
Just to hear her say I love you back would be the best gift ever.
Hearing her voice would be so relaxing.

False accusations about DV VICTIM on MIOIDV
There have been some recent postings on MIOIDV that are very troublesome to our family. These are posts regarding a VICTIM of domestic violence; she was subjected to physical, psychological and emotional abuse for over 20 years.

It is the opinion of the Aukerman family that the administrator of MIOIDV has seemingly joined forces with the City of Plainwell Department of Public Safety; the employer of our late daughter/sister's murderer, Kevin Brainard. Plainwell Public Safety employs the private attorney of the VICTIM'S ex-husband; Plainwell's Prosecuting Attorney Robert Champion.

Our family cannot comprehend the motivation behind the MIOIDV administrator's vitriol ramblings about this VICTIM of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. The VICTIM was physically, emotionally and psychologically abused by an individual whom the MIOIDV administrator has seemingly decided to support.

The administrator has placed false statements regarding this VICTIM on MIOIDV. The Aukerman family is confused and angered as to the motivation behind the administrator’s attacks. Because of these false and defamatory comments about this VICTIM, our family has made a decision to disassociate with MIOIDV and the individual maintaining the site.

Our family is advocating that anyone relying upon the information posted on MIOIDV do so with caution. YOU may be the administrator's next VICTIM. The actions of the administrator of this site are malicious and reprehensible. The administrator has and continues to publish materially false information about a a VICTIM OF DV. Our family was present at this VICTIM'S court hearing. We can verify that the information on MIOIDV about this VICTIM is not fact.

On numerous occasions our family and this VICTIM have provided the administrator of MIOIDV with significant financial assistance. Our family suspects that the administrator of MIOIDV is receiving some type of remuneration from one or more of the parties from Plainwell who are involved. This ALLEGED ADVOCATE'S ACTIONS are and will perpetuate and increase legalized DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

Please be careful in trusting this person. We fear that this individual has no compunction about taking advantage of OTHER VULNERABLE and INNOCENT VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. No human being with any empathy or conscience would choose to prosper by collaborating with the PERPETRATORS and ENABLERS of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. It is our opinion that this is exactly what has occurred in this situation. Shameful!

Our family does not condone and our daughter/sister/niece/Kyle and Kayla's late mom would not have condoned the actions and behaviors of the administrator of this site. Two Years have come upon us since you left us here on earth and joined our heavenly father and to be with the angles so pure. We go on with the knowledge that you are in the arms of the angels, free from suffering, pain, and sorrow. We know you are happy and smiling your beautiful smile in heaven. We all go on with out you here and try and live a new kind of balanced life. We hold tight to, hope, faith, love, family and Gods promise that one day we all will be together again.

Though it dose not stop the pain of loosing you, It dose not stop us from loving you, missing you. It dose not fill the empty space in our hearts and souls, nothing can ever fill that void, and it is yours forever. We are thankful for our precious memories they can laugh, smile or bring tears to our eyes depending on what kind of day were having.
The pain of our loss can still be almost unbearable at times, tears still fall at times I suspect they always will. This is a painting on Roger and Gloria Brainards pole barn outside of Otsego. A tribute to their hero Kevin. If you didn't know the story you would think he died an honorable death. That he was an up standing citizen and person. Well we know that is all a lie. Kevin did not die a hero. He died a murderer and coward! Kevin shot at my sister four times. Three hit her in the neck and face. This was no accident. Kevin could have stopped after one and called for help. NO he shot her two more times. Took off for an hour. He then came back and shot himself. So in my book this was no accident. The angel in the left hand corner shocked me. These people think he is in heaven. That God and his angels are watching over him. Uh NO, Kevin is in HELL!!! Burning for eternity.

On Saturday I was on my way to drop off Chase, he was staying with his friend. Well I passed a garage sale. I had to stop. I promised Chase this was the only one. Chase of course found something he wanted. He went up to ask the lady hoe much it was, he did not believe me as usual. Well the lady turned out to be a lady I would go to church with. She thought Chase looked like my younger brother David, she looked at me and said Jennifer. We were talking and then Chase said my moms sister died he said, she was a nurse. Chase has not spoken out loud to a stranger about Pam. So I started to tell the story, the lady sitting next to the lady asked if she was an OB nurse . She was holding a young child. A child Pam helped deliver. She was one year and two days. She remembered Pam, her nurse. Pam loved working with the babies and mothers. She worked so hard to get there. To Pam it was worth it! She was proud of herself and we as her family was proud. Pam was remembered by her patients! Pam was right by my side when I gave birth. She was great! She was a great mom! A great Friend! Forever is a huge word. For eternity; without end. It is still so unreal.
Last summer Pam and I were camping ( I was with my ex-husband). One day the ex said to me "the next time your family sees you, you'll be in the obituary. When I told my sister that day. She was ready to call my parents. She insisted I go to the YWCA. We picked when I was moving, July 29. Chelsie's birthday. I moved to my parents. Two months later Pam was murdered in cold blood! I replay the phone calls with him. Trying to see if there were any signals before the last call. It was to late she was gone. The world lost a good soul. She touched so many life's. She loved and was loved. A part of me is missing. Pam I miss you.Goodnight

Officer Kevin Brainard is the only to BLAME?????

Never has the Aukerman family or friends blamed Roger, Gloria, Kim, for Kevin murdering Pam. The Aukermans blame Roger, Gloria, Kim for how they for handled themselves AFTER the murder.

1.) When my parents said they would be over to the Brainard's home to see Kayla. You ran to the courthouse to file emergency guardianship papers out. You lied about my parents. It was said my parents didn't want Kayla. That Pam didn't want Kayla at my parents home. And so on. What is even worse then that. Our family had the police called on them. You made us out to be bad people. IT DID NOT HAVE TO BE THIS WAY!

2.) Before anyone had permission to enter the home, You cleaned it out! You tore my sisters belongings. You tore her medical bag apart. How disrespectful!

3.) You bad mouthed Pam. You made all these excuses up as to why Kevin killed her. He took on her ex's debt her credit card bills and so on. My sister made two to three times more money then Kevin! She did not need that from him.

I could go on forever. This website is Pam's family and friends! It's ours to write anything we want. If the Brainards and Kim our offended by what we write. Stop acting like you are. We are not lying, we don't have a reason to.

Kayla is our baby girl. We love her so much and the games you played with us over her is unforgivable! We needed to come together for her and Kyle. They needed us to be strong for them. If you really took a look at the situation you would know Kayla wants to be here. Since day one she has told us all. So you need to look at yourself because when Kayla is older she'll ask why and how. She'll come to her own conclusions. We don't have to bad mouth the Brainards or Kim. Their actions will speak for them!

One more thing, have you asked yourselves how could Kevin have done this to Pam if he loved his daughter?

Get Over It

Pam was an awesome person! Anyone that knew her knows that. We have great talks of her. She is never far from us. As her sister I have made the decision to share what her life was like with Kevin. And I also decided to share what our life has been like after Pam's murder. Because Pam would want to educate another victim. To educate another victims family. Some people think that this site is not of education material. That all we do is slam Kevin and his family. Not at all, we are stating all facts and if they sound bad to you think of what this B.S. is doing to me, my family, most of all Kyle and Kayla.
We have had great success with victims. We are helping here in our own community and elsewhere in Michigan. We are making great progress and we are building a support group for victims and there families. I am very proud of this site and MIOIDV. My sister did not die in vain. She will continue to live on.
The one thing my sister wanted more then anything was to divorce Kevin. To finally be free of him. To be safe. THAT IS WHY WE GAVE HER, HER LAST NAME BACK, AUKERMAN!!! So get over it.

OTSEGO -- Plainwell police officers today are struggling to understand what may have prompted a seven-year officer on the force to kill his wife and then shoot himself late Sunday.

"We are at a loss when it comes to that," said Plainwell Public Safety Director Bill Bomar.

"We don't know much about what his marital life was like."

After a relative called Otsego police, officers went to the home of Kevin and Pam Brainard, 707 Brookside Drive, and found Pam Brainard, 33, dead of gunshot wounds. Kevin Brainard also was in the house, critically wounded from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He later died at Borgess-Pipp Hospital.Court records show the Brainards were married Sept. 16, 2006, in Plainwell and bought the Brookside Drive house in 2005.

Bomar described Kevin Brainard as a "very good officer" and said he was active in the community as an assistant soccer coach at Otsego High School."

Soccer and firefighting were his passions," Bomar said.The next-door neighbor of the Brainards said the couple has a 2-year-old daughter. The neighbor, Patricia Finnegan, did not know whether the daughter was home when the shootings occurred.

Finnegan said the Brainards seemed like a normal couple and had made many improvements to their house."They put a lot of work into the house. They put new windows in and added a sunroom," she said, describing them as "very nice."

She was not aware of any domestic problems in the family and wonders what might have prompted the shooting."Everybody is asking that, but nobody has answers," she said.

Meanwhile, the Plainwell Police Department has brought grief counselors to help other officers cope with the deaths.

On the Tuesday after you were taken from us I found the Thank You card that you left under my desk calendar the previous Friday. It was just like you to be thoughtful even with all you were going through.

I phoned the last patient that we saw together on Friday and told her that you would not be able to be her nurse anymore and why it was that you couldn't. She cried, and then I did too.

You were truly special and will always have a place in my heart and the hearts of the many people you touched through your nursing and family life. You are missed terribly, but will never, ever be forgotten.

Countless people are coming together in your memory to tell your story and make sure everyone knows that when Pamela Ann Aukerman was taken away, the world lost a most precious jewel. PS They played a country song at your memorial ceremony! :)

Co-workers remember Pam Brainard as being perfectly suited to be a nurse.

“Her job was perfect for her because she was everything a nurse should be,” said Jennifer Dentler, who worked with her at Allegan General Hospital.

Brainard was found murdered Nov. 4, according to police, by her husband, Kevin, a Plainwell Public Safety Officer, at the couple’s home in Otsego.

Co-workers from the hospital remembered her working to bring new people into the world at the hospital’s birth center. She’d worked at the birth center about a year, while previously working in home health care.

Dentler, a fellow nurse, said Brainard’s best skill was working with patients.

“She loved to teach, she was really great with the moms and babies with getting out parenting info or anything they needed,” Dentler said.

She knew how to ask the right questions of patients, Dentler said, to get the answers nurses needed.

“She was great at just counseling and helping the moms and babies, beyond just providing care,” she said.

Brainard took it upon herself to become certified in putting in car seats and would go out to the car with mothers and babies leaving the birth center to make sure their car seats were put in correctly.That was just one example, Dentler said, of her going above and beyond.

“Always after somebody delivered, she’d call and check back in even when she wasn’t working to check on them,” she said. “She’d go above and beyond. When she was off-duty she’d call and check on her patients.”

The nurses at the birth center work 12-hour shifts, but Brainard was always busy.

“She was always, always, always working,” Dentler said. “She was never one to just sit back and read when we were down, she’d always have something we were doing.”

She was survived by her two children, Kyle, 14, and Kayla Marie, 2.

“She talked a lot about her children,” Dentler said. “That’s what we talked about a lot.”

That seemed very in line with her personality at work, Dentler said.“Pam just exuded a very motherly nature about her. She was very much a caretaker. She was very intuitive with the patients and with us. She’d see if you were sick or sad and she’d want to take care of you.”

Brainard was born July 2, 1974, Kalamazoo to David and Debra Aukerman. She grew up in Mattawan and was buried Saturday, Nov. 10, in Kalamazoo.

According to their funeral home’s Web site, the family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Y.W.C.A. Domestic Assault Program.

Dentler said she’d be missed.“Deeply, deeply missed,” she said. “It’s a very hard thing to understand, but she’ll just be missed.”

Police suspect a Plainwell Public Safety officer shot his wife and then himself late Sunday, Nov. 4.

The bodies of Kevin and Pam Brainard were found inside the couple’s home by Otsego police and Allegan County sheriff deputies about 10 p.m. Sunday after a family member called 9-1-1. Kevin Brainard was taken to Borgess Pipp Health Center, but was pronounced dead there.

Police said he and his wife both had gun shot wounds to the head.Brainard had been a public safety officer in Plainwell for about seven years and a volunteer fireman in Otsego for about 12 years.

Otsego police Chief Gordon Konkle said the case was shocking.“No one that I know of had any idea this was coming,” Konkle said. “It was out of the blue. We’d never been there on a domestic abuse call, or anything that I am aware of and I think I’d be aware of it if it had happened.”

No other indications of impending violence had been seen, as far as police know, he said.“You never know what is going on in somebody’s house,” Konkle said. “People are private, sometimes, and never air their dirty laundry in public. But this is the epidemic that’s running through everywhere, as far as domestic assault. This was a domestic assault that escalated. It’s unfortunate it came to this and that they didn’t get help.”

Konkle said that investigation suggested the couple were having marital problems.

The crime was the first murder Otsego police could remember taking place in the city in anyone’s memory, Konkle said.“This was a shock to us, both of the families are good people and our condolences go out to them,” he said.

Plainwell Director of Public Safety Bill Bomar said that Brainard had been an exemplary officer.“He was one of our hardest working officers,” Bomar said. “An officer who absolutely loved his job.”

Bomar said his department had sat down with a grief counselor.“Our deposition counsel said last night that you can’t see that stuff, these people hide that stuff,” he said.

His department never received an indication anything like this was coming, Bomar said.“He was a good employee, we never had any issues,” he said. “I wish everyone had worked as hard as he did.”

Konkle said Pam Brainard wasn’t an Otsego native like her husband and that she worked as a nurse.

He said Kevin Brainard was known in Otsego and Plainwell for volunteering. He ran a mock drunk driving accident at Plainwell High School several years ago, meant to illustrate the perils of drunk driving. He’d been an assistant soccer coach and worked on charitable programs for the fire department.

“I’ve know him since I’ve been here and longer, since he went through the police academy in Kalamazoo that I taught at,” he said. “It seems like he shouldn’t be known just as a murderer when he did all the volunteering and things, but that’s what happened.”

Otsego police are awaiting autopsy results.

The regular meeting of the Otsego City Commission began Monday, Nov. 5, with a moment of silence for the families.

“They both served the community for a number of years,” said Otsego Mayor Joel Thompson. “It’s a horrific and tragic loss.”

The commission asked for prayers to the families.

BRAINARD (AUKERMAN), PamelaOf Otsego Passed away Sunday, November 4, 2007. Pam was born July 2, 1974 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of David and Debra (Hayward) Aukerman and was raised in Mattawan. She had worked for Gentiva for several years as a Registered Nurse, in the Medicaid Programs such as the Mother-Infant Program, Home Health Care and finding resources for funds to help Mothers in difficult medical situations. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Willard and Barbara Aukerman. Pam is survived by her parents, Dave and Deb Aukerman of Mattawan; her children, Kyle Aukerman and Kayla Marie; her sister, Jennifer Drake; her brother, David (Peggy) Aukerman; her maternal grandparents, Robert and Shirley Hayward; several cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, including a very special nephew, Chase.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday in the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel 411 E. Centre Ave. with Pastor John Vick and Pastor Mark Minger, officiating.

Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.

Sunday night Pam Brainard was shot to death in her Otsego home. It appears her husband Kevin, a Plainwell Public Safety officer, shot her and then turned the gun on himself.

Tuesday we have new information about the final days of Pam Brainard's life.

"She called me on her cell phone," said Ed Straub. It was only the second time Straub had heard from his ex-wife since their divorce. "I was a little bit surprised." That surprise quickly turned to fear. In a voicemail Pam said she was leaving her current husband, Kevin Brainard.

"I called her back and stated she shouldn't be calling me, she should fear for her life because he's going to find out about that phone call," said Straub.

Then last Friday Ed was so scared for his safety and Pam's, he decided to tell police in Plainwell.

He met with the chief before Kevin arrived for his night shift. "The Chief of Police stated he wouldn't want anyone on his force that could act like this and he was going to check into it with what he could," said Straub. But Ed didn't have formal evidence of a threat or a police report. He knew the police didn't have much to go on.

Then Sunday night the 911 calls started coming in. It was already too late.

Those deaths stunned Kevin Brainard's boss. The Police Chief told us he had no idea this was possible.

"We're all in that, wondering what happened, what we missed, where could we help," said Chief Bill Bomar.

Tuesday we asked him about that meeting with Pam's ex-husband. He told us off-camera it was a private conversation, not a police report.

Even Ed Straub seemed to know he'd have trouble getting anyone to believe him. "You got an ex-husband coming and blaming a police officer for these type of things and accusing him and saying he's going to do this kind of thing, me coming in off the street, that's a tough thing to believe," said Straub.

Otsego Police should know more about the exact sequence of events inside the home in the next few days. That's when they'll get autopsy results for Kevin and Pam.

In the call, Roger Brainard, is heard telling dispatchers what he saw:

--"Dispatcher: "Okay."

Both Pam and Kevin Brainard were dead.

Jennifer Drake, Pam's sister, said Pam was concerned for her safety when she decided to leave Kevin Brainard. But she didn't think police would take her concerns seriously."

She knew once she made a report on him that he would lose, he could lose his job," Drake told 24 Hour News 8. "His whole career could be over with."

But Chief Bill Bomar said if a report had been filed, his department would follow the law and investigate. If the claim was substantiated, the case would be turned over to another jurisdiction, in most cases the Michigan State Police.

If an officer is found guilty, the department could suspend him and require counseling, plus whatever the court ruled.

A police psychologist told 24 Hour News 8 that under Title 18, an officer found guilty of domestic violence must turn over their sidearm.

In other words, no gun, no job.

One, a voice mail message from her brother-in-law, Kevin Brainard, followed by a call she made."I told her, I said, 'Pam, you've got to get out of the house. He's calling, leaving us messages. He doesn't sound good,'" Drake told 24 Hour News 8. "'Get out of the house!'

"Within that same hour, Pam Brainard, a nurse and mother of two, was dead. Police believe Kevin Brainard, a Plainwell police officer and firefighter, shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself.

The couple's 2-year-old daughter was in the home, but not injured."I knew how bad things are getting for her, but I really thought she was going to get out of there," Drake said.

Drake said her sister had just told Brainard she was filing for divorce. The two had been married about a year. But it was a tough year for Pam, according to her sister."He played mind games with her," Drake said. "I mean, her phone would be filled with 100 calls a day by him. Her receipts were checked. I mean, every little thing of hers was under a microscope with him."

But Pam Brainard never contacted police. Her sister said she knew it could ruin his career, and she wasn't convinced she'd get anywhere with a complaint.

Drake said, "She didn't feel comfortable because of him being a police officer in that town."But Otsego's police chief said police officers are held to higher standards.

"I think there's a lot of pain now. There's a lot of pain. She's upset," said Chief Gordon Konkle.

"Hopefully she doesn't really believe that."Kevin Brainard's boss, Plainwell Director of Public Safety Bill Bomar, said Brainard was a good officer who received commendations for traffic enforcement including drunk driving.

Brainard, like other officers in the department, went through a psychiatric evaluation before being hired.

OTSEGO -- Autopsies were to be performed Monday on a Plainwell public-safety officer and his wife found shot in an apparent murder-suicide Sunday night.

A family member called police after discovering the bodies of Kevin and Pam Brainard in their home in the 700 block of Brookside Drive at 10 p.m., police said. It appeared that Kevin Brainard, 31, shot his wife, who was dead when police arrived, and then turned the gun on himself, according to the Otsego Police Department.

Kevin Brainard was pronounced dead a short time after reaching the Borgess-Pipp Hospital emergency room, said Otsego Police Chief Gordon Konkle.Konkle said Monday morning that it wasn't clear what led to the presumed murder-suicide.

"Obviously, it appears to be a domestic situation," he said. "We are trying to backtrack with friends and relatives."

Autopsies were to be performed Monday at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.

Konkle said Kevin Brainard was with the Plainwell Department of Public Safety for about seven years and was a volunteer firefighter in Otsego for perhaps 10 years. He grew up in Otsego.

"It's a small town. He's well-known ... with his job in the fire department and Plainwell," Konkle said. "This was a shock and a tragedy."

Police tell us Kevin Brainard, a Plainwell Public Safety officer and volunteer fire-fighter, killed his wife Pam and then ended his own life. It was around ten Sunday night when police were called to the home. It was one of Kevin Brainard's family members who reported a problem.

When investigators made their way inside, they found Pam and Kevin.

People that knew the couple tell us they'd been married for a little over a year. Neighbors on Brookside tell us they had never heard arguing and never had known anything was wrong.

Police found Pam Brainard dead at the couple's Otsego home. They also found Kevin Brainard. He'd been shot, and later died at the emergency room. Investigators are trying to determine what happened in their home that lead to this fatal conclusion.

There is mixed reaction in Allegan County. For many it is the surprise of a lifetime. A mother and father, husband and wife, public safety officer and registered nurse, torn from a small town.

Kevin Brainard, the man police say killed his wife then turned the gun on himself. But why? Why would a man who swore to protect citizens, emotionally cave to murder and suicide?

"You'd never expect this from him or his family and you don't expect this in a town like this,” said Chief Gordan Konkle of the Otsego Police Department.

"He was very verbally abusive and controlling," said one of Pam's best friends. She thinks Kevin snapped. She asked to remain anonymous, painting one nasty picture of her friend's husband. Someone she says Pam threatened to leave last week.

"She couldn't feel comfortable going to the cops because they believed he's one of their own and they were gonna take his side,” said the friend.

But her description of a domestic danger doesn't match the public's perception of Officer Brainard. There is not a single blemish on his career as a public safety officer or volunteer firefighter.

"You'd expect this is a safe place but it just goes to show tragedies like this happen, domestic violence and other issues that come up,” said Chief Konkle.

Chief Konkle worked with Kevin for a number of years as he was a volunteer firefighter in his department. He calls this case very personal and very sensitive for that reason. Autopsies are being performed in Lansing Monday. Police continue to investigate the shootings. If you have information that can help police call them at 269-692-6111.

I'm so angry right now! My second FOIA request is over $1,000! I'm asking for phone records and such from around the time Pam was murdered. After I pay they still have to redact information. I believe that what I think happened did indeed happen.
For three years we have tried to come to terms about Pam's murder. It is so unbelievably hard to do. And knowing there are people who are partly responsible still looking at there children everyday pisses me off! If one of these people did in fact act on Kevin's behaviors maybe they would BOTH be here! If Bill Bomar acted in the proper way on November 2, 2007, Pam would be here with her children! Kyle and Kayla! Bomar did a wrong thing that day that set the ball rolling. And here we are three years later. If we did not have Kayla's custody issues in the beginning and that will continue, a lawsuit against Bomar and friends would be happening! I still have a few more months to make our final decision on this matter.

Whereas, Michigan state legislators through past legislation have designated the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, It has been demonstrated that Michigan Domestic Violence Organizations do not represent victims of Officer Involved Domestic Violence (OIDV), and therefore victims of OIDV are not represented and acknowledged during the current Michigan Domestic Violence Awareness Month of October.

Whereas, This lack of awareness of OIDV in Michigan has led to victims of OIDV not having the empowerment needed to escape situations of domestic violence, and has in many instances, led to the deaths of victims of OIDV who have attempted to leave situations of OIDV on their own because they have been denied assistance from Michigan domestic violence organizations.
Whereas, In Allegan County, in 2007, Pamela Aukerman, a victim of OIDV sought the assistance of two (2) Allegan County domestic violence agencies, when she decided to leave her abusive marriage to Officer Kevin Brainard (Plainwell Police Department).

Whereas, Pamela Aukerman was turned away/ denied assistance by Allegan County Domestic Violence Agencies, based on the sole fact that her abuser (Officer Kevin Brainard/ Plainwell Police Department) was a police officer.

Whereas, due to this prejudice against victims of OIDV by Michigan domestic violence agencies, Pamela Aukerman was left to her own means to escape OIDV.

Whereas, In Plainwell Michigan, on November 04, 2007 Pamela Aukerman Brainard was murdered by her ex-husband, Officer Kevin Brainard (Plainwell Police Department).

Whereas, Jennifer Aukerman Drake; Rich Klemmer; and Renee’ Harrington, introduced the Pamela Aukerman OIDV Bill, following the OIDV murder of Pamela Aukerman. The Pamela Aukerman OIDV Bill will provide: 1) A separation of officer involved domestic violence from non-officer domestic violence; 2) A state run agency for victims of OIDV, which will provide assistance for victims of OIDV; serve as an outreach program for victims of OIDV; oversee all insistences of OIDV; oversee all investigations into OIDV complaints; oversee all department reprimand hearings for insistences of OIDV; oversee all criminal hearings of OIDV; etc. 3) An extension of current Michigan domestic violence laws to victims of OIDV; 4) A mandated uniform OIDV police department OIDV policy; and 5) Release of funds from the federal Crystal Judson STOP grant to the Michigan OIDV programs set forth in the Pamela Aukerman OIDV Bill. The Pamela Aukerman OIDV Bill is currently before Michigan state legislators.

Whereas, Jennifer Aukerman Drake, Rich Klemmer, Deon____, and Renee’ Harrington established the Michigan OIDV organization, following the murder of Pamela Aukerman, further distinguishing the uniqueness of the plight of victims of OIDV victims in the state, from that of non-police officer dv victims.

Whereas, We know that the number one component in assisting victims of domestic violence is breaking the wall of silence that traps its victims. Previous legislation in enacting the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month was envisioned by the Michigan State Legislators as a time to educate the public on domestic violence; to educate victims as to the programs available; to reach out to victims of domestic violence; to end the silence of domestic violence; and to empower victims of domestic violence through their numbers.

Whereas, The domestic violence victims not being reached and acknowledged during Michigan’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, are the victims of OIDV. This separation, lack of acknowledgement and therefore empowerment only continues to manifest the silence that traps its victims.

Whereas, One of the best ways to reach out to victims of OIDV and to educate the public is to acknowledge the existence of OIDV and its victims.

Whereas, A Michigan Officer Involved Domestic Violence Awareness Day dedicated to honoring the victims of OIDV who have been murdered and victims of OIDV who have escaped, will offer hope and strength to other victims of OIDV. In May of 2007, Representative Kimberly Meltzer (Macomb County, MI), requested that Renee' Harrington and Cheryl Rozman write a draft for an officer involved domestic violence law.

On June 26, 2007, Renee' and Cheryl submitted to Representative Meltzer the 'Michigan Officer Involved Domestic Violence Legislation'.

Following the officer involved domestic violence murder of Pamela Aukerman, Renee' and Cheryl signed over all rights of the Michigan OIDV legislation to the Aukerman family, on November 05, 2007.
